About Dentures

If you have considered a denture, you may understand that a denture is a prosthetic device constructed to replace missing teeth, and are supported by the hard and soft tissues of the oral cavity.

A denture treatment comes in various types, including a full denture, partial denture, and implant denture. A standard denture is removable, but others are held in place with bonding or by clasping them onto the teeth. An implant denture is permanently screwed into the jaw bone.

Partial Dentures

Partial dentures rest on a metal structure that attaches to your existing teeth with a hook. Oftentimes, crowns are placed on your teeth and provide an anchor for the denture. In addition, they are a removable alternative to bridges.

Full Dentures

Full dentures sit on the gum and are removable prosthetic devices that replace all of the teeth on the upper and lower teeth.

Full Denture Advantages

  • Affordable method to replace all teeth
  • Aesthetically pleasing and look like natural teeth
  • Fastest treatment time

Full Denture Disadvantages

  • An upper denture covers the full roof of the mouth, and the dentures may be cumbersome.
  • A lower denture has less stability because various muscles such as the tongue can move and displace the denture.
  • Discomfort may exist due to the anatomy of a patient’s jaw. Also, the jaws change over time, so it’s recommended that a denture be relined periodically to maintain stability.

Implant Dentures

Implant dentures have grown in popularity as an option for restoring missing teeth in contrast to conventional bridges or partial dentures. Implants are inserted directly into the jawbone, similar to a natural tooth’s root. Then the denture is securely fastened to the implants, and you appear to have natural teeth.

Are You a Candidate for Dental Implants?

To be a candidate for denture implants, the patient must have healthy gums and plentiful thickness in the jawbone to allow the implants to be fitted properly. To learn if implants could be appropriate for you, call us for a consultation.

Dental Implant Procedure

The dental implant procedure can be performed painlessly while the patient is under local unaesthetic. The patient is awake during the procedure, but the mouth is completely numb in the area where the work is being done. Dr. Coats works closely with the dental surgeon to fabricate a denture to fit precisely to the existing implants.
